Family History

Memories, like sand stones
Slowly, a grain follows a grain,
Erode, crumble, and vanish.
Sea waves and wind
Sweep them away
Hurry
Listen to the voices
Collect the words,
The names, the episodes, the moments…
Carve and seal them
In a meticulously crafted pendant
Close to your heart
Allow them to live forever.

SZNAJDERMAN FAMILY

The surname Sznajderman appears all over Poland. According to Alexander Beider’s Dictionary of Jewish Surnames from the Kingdom of Poland, the surname Sznajderman is drawn from the German word for tailor, Sznajder. The birth records of the children of our earliest ancestor, Marek Sznajderman, provide the information about his occupation. He was krawiec, the Polish word for tailor.
I collected records, photos, stories, articles and newspaper clips.  I arranged and rearranged all these objects and created a glimpse into the history of Abraham Moshe Sznajderman’s branch, and the places where the family once walked.
I interweaved the history of the towns Zawiercie and Pilica with the life of Abraham Moshe Sznajderman. Reading the book, The Hare with Amber Eyes, by Edmund De Waal, gave me the inspiration to walk through the towns’ history and the lives of the family members hand in hand.
The charts on this page give an overview of our earliest known ancestors, Marek and Rochla Sznajderman. One of their descendants is Icyk Zelik Sznajderman. The second long chart below maps his descendants. He is the father of Eliezer Sznajderman who is the father of Abraham Moshe Sznajderman.
The story of Abraham Moshe Sznajderman is my introduction to the Sznajderman family.
